Light and Time, Question for a Physicistd

June 14, 2017

Sent this question about LIGHT AND TIME, to ASK A MATHEMATICIAN See there website at
askamathematician.com

My Question.
Light is outside time, but if it enters a Bose Einstein Condensate, it slows down. How do we reconcile that the photon is both outside time, but slows down?

Their Answer.
There’s a post here that talks about that a bit.

Basically, when light exists, it’s traveling at c. When light “slows down”, then at least part of the time it’s not light. In the experiments where light is “stopped” it would be more accurate to say that it is “stored”. Very carefully prepared condensates (not just any old condensate) stops light kinda like a vinyl record stops sound (kinda). Hope that helps!

Q. If you are a photon, what time is it?

A. ?????

Physics , the new phiction!

Physics Phun (poem)

a photon goes so fast
it’s at the speed of light
but moving at that speed
there’s no room for time
it’s flying in forever
outside the rest of us
it’s here, there, and everywhere
in the universe

Physics, the new Fiction (The ongoing, beginning, and final, story of Alpha)

December 3, 2013

Physics, the new Phyction. Physics has gotten so weird, that it’s our new fiction. I’m going to take a fact of physics and go with it and see where I land.

“Particles that travel at exactly light speed – for example, the light particle, or photon – use up all of their motion in speeding through space. A photon, therefore, does not travel through time. “This light does not get old, ” explains (Brian) Greene. A photon that emerged from the big bang is the same age today as it was then. There is no passage of time at light speed.”*

Let’s repeat that last line, ‘THERE IS NO PASSAGE OF TIME AT LIGHT SPEED.” Now let’s think.

So,let’s say we have a photon that emerged from the Big Bang and is now falling on our eyes here on Earth. Let’s call it ALPHA Here’s what we know for sure: Alpha travels at the speed of light Alpha does not travel through time. Alpha does not get old. Alpha never stops moving. So Alpha traveled from where it started to here in no time at all. Alpha travelled for the age of the universe (about 13 billion years) in no time at all. Alpha is before our eyes at the same moment it was created. Alpha moves on beyond us in no time at all. Alpha continues it’s journey and never stops, in no time at all. Alpha has/is/will cover every inch of the universe in no time at all. So Alpha is everywhere at the same time. Alpha and all light is everywhere in the universe at the same time. Alpha and every particle moving at the speed of light is outside time Alpha and every particle moving at the speed of light is everywhere at the same time. So ? ?? ??? ???? ???? …

Here’s more. ┬áLet’s put some ideas together.

1. photons left the big bang at the speed of light
2. at the speed of light, no time passes.
That would suggest there is no time between the big bang and now for a photon. In other words the big bang is happening now for the photon?

More combinations.
1. Photons were all concentrated in the big bang.
2. Were they all entangled with each other?
Then, are all photons from the big bang entangled together? And if there is no time for a photon, then are all photons entangled now as they were at the big bang?

Photons (the reality of physics is pretty weird) poem

PHOTONS

these photons are
such queer fish
sometimes spurts
from a fire hydrant
sometimes fog
that encases the city

I look through the glass
when recess comes
95 percent
go into the yard
5 percent
return home

they move in pairs
and so obstinate
no matter how apart –
spins opposite.

and when they get mad
it does them no good
blows lead to total
annihilation

once they cool down
they can pop back in
as new but chained
photon twins
