MEDIA WATCHDOGS in one sense enables bad media to continue. By calling them out you bring attention to them, that should better be on those indie media that are doing media right. Those you neglect mentioning, you help keep marginalized while you keep the bad media in the center of attention and top dogs in firm position.

3 Golden Ages in the Arts

From 1990 to 2020 there was a golden age of technology but no golden age of content in the arts. The mainstream mega corporations invented new tech, but couldn’t find content to fill them!

Through the last 30 years there has been a consolidation of companies connected to the arts and media into fewer and fewer hands. This consolidation has ruined almost all the arts from music, writing, and art, to film, theater, and dance.

But there are these 3 exceptions. They all have something in common. They all developed outside the control of the giant media art conglomerates. That means that in every case thousands competed, not 5 or so mega corporations like in the mainstream generic arts.

These three still remain unappreciated and underreported by the mainstream media.

Here are 3 that stand out for me.

1. Zines. The late 80s and 90s were the last golden age of literature before the net.
2. Online bloggers, and original youtube channels, are the new radio and TV. 3. The Korean wave of both K-Pop and K-Dramas developed innovative music and TV / films.

When Major Brands Fail, Everyone Wins

When major brands fall, everyone wins!

Boomers got most of their advertising from 3 TV networks and a single local newspaper. So the companies that controlled ads on those outlets became major brands, got mega big, began to lobby and then control the government as they pushed out competition.

But Millennials don’t have that brand loyalty because they didn’t have that concentrated brand onslaught – and they look to the internet for info, not the networks, not a local newspaper.

That break down of major brands means, a breakdown of major corporations that have ruled too much for too long; and in doing so, they have more and more limited everything to control more.

Specifically in the arts, this change will go a long way in opening the door to thousands of companies competing in music, publishing, film, media, etc. etc. etc.

Look to a break down of the big, and an opening door for all the rest of us.
