My Style of Music , a letter to a music friend.

November 22, 2019

My Style of Music
Let me add this thought. I did traditional rock recordings in the eighties; guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, but then evolved to a simpler style, back to basics that I really like. So, should I studio record this or any of my songs, it would not be a retro band attempt from the style of 60 years ago, but a new more simple arrangement, in the new style that most don’t seem to like much, or at best are bewildered that it doesn’t sound like it “should”, in the old style.
At most any studio recording of mine now would involve a lead singer, 2 background singers and one or two standard guitars, and the comments would still be: I want to hear the old style, don’t you? No, not anymore. There were the Beatles and 60 years of imitators in my opinion. We don’t need me to be another. Yes many here are doing original and fine work in this style, and it suits them. Your work is a fine example, but it is not for me anymore.

5th CD Review by Barry

November 12, 2018

This review is from Barry (don’t know his last name) who won a Musea quiz and got my 5th CD as prize – November 2011.

My 9 CD set is virtually all the same, so his words work for all 150 recorded songs.

I’m currently enjoying your album “5TH”, having been pleasantly surprised by the sheer craft and accessibility of your music. I expected something very different and perhaps not so accessible from the progenitor of “post-band” music, but this is simply a pleasure.

Your voice is open, unaffected, and unfailingly musical, a little similar to my ears to Don McLean

The CD is well designed and produced, and makes a fine presentation to anyone you should wish to impress.

Thank you for your gift to me. Guess I’m ‘wised up”.*

Best Regards,
Barry

*My quizzes have the preface, “I don’t dumb down, so you wise up!” That is what he is referring to.

Twelve Rules for Making a Hollywood Movie

September 6, 2018

Dear Reader, This week let’s have some fun with Hollywood!

TWELVE RULES FOR MAKING A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE

1. Vocal coaches must instruct all actors to whisper or scream all lines, ‘… like they do in real life!’

2. Aging male stars must date starlets.

3. Films must fit one of three formats:

Kids = cartoon movies
Women = love stories with a wedding at the end.
Men = action heroes with lots of special effects.

4. Must spend over 50 million to advertise film – this stuff won’t sell itself!

5. There must be conflict. If the character buys a loaf of bread the clerk, a total stranger, has to scowl, hassle, and oppose him at every turn, ’cause that’s reality!

6. Keep the following out of your film, seniors, children, teens, people of color, happily married couples, and women in leadership positions; unless they are plot points; but even then, never dwell on them!

7. All characters must come from broken homes like the screenwriters do!

8. Movie posters must be cluttered with a list all thousand of the executive producers, regular producers, directors, etc. to emphasize the personal vision of the writer.

9. Dumb down everything except for a single plot point surprise at the end.

10. Bystanders must never get involved and have to act like frozen props! Make sure that minor characters act exceptionally stubborn and stupid to move the plot along!

11. Originality is extremely important – specially in sequels, and remakes.

12. Theater employees that sell the tickets and popcorn, must continue to get the lowest wages and benefits allowed by law. Though Hollywood walks the red carpet, theater workers must be swept under it!

Pennies from October Skies

November 10, 2015

Right now I have 150 songs on 9 CD’s streaming.  So the cash is rolling in right?  Well rolling is a good term, because most plays get much less than the smallest rolling coin  Here is what I, and I would think most indie musicians, is getting. This list covers all of October 2015.  Note when there is $00.00 that means I got paid less than .005 of a penny for that transaction.
(Note I have 4 books too, they have made $6 – mostly in review copies that I’ve bought for reviewers!)

Why Are So Many People Saying Bad Music is Good?

July 5, 2015

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE SAYING BAD MUSIC IS GOOD?

Music has really reached some new lows. Why are so many people saying it’s great when it isn’t? Why are so many people listening to generic formulaic music and claiming it’s innovative and new? Why doesn’t a single person in the music press stand up for good music, and against the bad that everyone else is praising so much?
Has corporate music jumped the shark?

Consider some of these points:
==========

This from SNL nasty critic character, Jebidiah Atkinson in talking about contemporary music and all the Grammy winners,
” (It’s a)… Spotify playlist of a 12 year old girl.”
===========

This is being passed around as Things that Will Disappear in our Lifetime e-mail.

MUSIC : … The music industry is dying a slow death not just because of illegal downloading. It’s the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is “catalogue items,” meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with — older, established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic further, check out the book, “Appetite For Self-Destruction” by Steve Knopper and video commentary, “Before the Music Dies.”

This from Billboard, Feb 14, 2015 :

This is from an interview of Lucian Grange, Chairman/CEO/Universal Music Group. the #1 person on the, 100 most powerful people in the music business, yearly list.

He is quoted as saying,
‘The industry broke five new artists in 2014, and we broke four of them.” Iggy Azalea, 5 Seconds of Summer, Ariana Grande, and Sam Smith. ”
UMG owns three of 2014’s top five labels.

Why would the biggest music exec in the world be proud that 1. he only released 4 new artists in a year, and 2. that the industry only released 5 in a year.
That is a massive failure. Where is the rest of the world? I’ve found 200 greats that should break out – see the BIG LIST http://wp.me/p5S9X-36

MUSIC is 80% 3 Companies: Warners/Universal/Sony (WUS)
For real vitality we need not 3 but thousands of competing record companies. Every time there has been a great variety of record companies, the music has improved, often to a point where there is a golden age of music.
==========

The FORMULA: electric guitars, bass, drums.

Some of us, including me, think that the music business is stuck in the same electric guitar, bass, and drums formula done better 60 years ago. Some of us think the real creativity is to break free of bands and go a different way from the 60 year old path that everyone else is on.
How can a musician fit a 60 year old formula and call it new?

Music Down to Coke or Pepsi, Swift or Beyonce.

Here’s the dilemma for the music media – either talk about thousands of musicians and their great music, or just cover Beyonce and Swift over and over and find out what they wear, and where they go.
Music now is down to Coke or Pepsi, Swift or Beyonce.

Where is the media? Rolling Stone, Spin, NPR, anyone – anywhere???

WHERE ARE THE HITS?

Compare the massive amount of hitmakers from 1955-1975 to the last 20 years.

==============

POSTISM, WHERE A LITTLE REBELLION BRINGS VITALITY BACK TO MUSIC.

There is a music revolution going on called Postism music out of Dallas. Some of these musicians are changing music history with some possible world’s firsts; while the dance pop stars that are over hyped seem to be most interested in more publicity.

POSTISM is 3 things, a revolution against what rock/rap/country/pop have become, its back to early rock and roll’s simple honesty, directness, and passion with an emphasis on melody and great SONGS, and it’s a music that includes all types of music from every place in the world.
(and It’s part of the overall art and media revolution).

80’s Called, They want their Videos Back
Have you noticed how only a few mainstream musicians can afford the cost of videos?
Time to put the emphasis on the music not the visuals. Leave videos back in the 80’s when they were relevant. That opens music up to everyone, not just a few with deep corporate pockets. And when you stress the quality of music, you get new, vital, better music again, not a rehash of 30 years ago.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

Some think it should close it’s doors!  Who is left to add in the current group?
Has rock/rap/country/pop jumped the shark?
