Got this e-mail. Thanks to Krissy for all her hard work over 8 years.
It looks like the end is near for We Make Zines as we know it. Ning, the website this social network is built on has raised the annual price from $239. to $588. and they have only given us a month’s notice!
There is no way I am going to let them charge me for the $588. on October 1st so I am going to have to delete the whole network. This is painful for me since there are so many great resources on here. I will still own the url wemakezines.com, so I am thinking I might collect some of the best information and make it available on a new website that isn’t a social network site, but since I just started a new job I don’t know how much time I will have to devote to it.
So, I would appreciate your help to save the text and images of the most important tutorials and discussions on here. Also, make sure you save your own images, copy and get contact info for people you don’t want to lose touch with.
I know this is drastic, but the only other option is for WMZ to support itself and I would have to ask every year for $588.00. I can imagine people would come through for the first year, but every year after that would be a struggle. It has already been difficult to come up with the $239.00. Also, Ning hasn’t done anything to improve the site at all which really pisses me off.
If there is a coder out there who can create a site or who knows how to transfer it, let me know. But, since so many members sign up and then seldom take part, I don’t know that transferring over 6,000 people is really the best option anyway.
We Make Zines has been the go-to place for zines since 2008. I am very sad to have to do this, but I don’t see another choice.
I’m sorry if this isn’t the most coherent message, but I wanted to get this out fast so people have time to take action.
It’s been a great 8 years. Thanks to everyone who took part and shared their love of zines. I’ll miss you all. Seeing what people do on here has always kept me inspired. Thank you,
We Make Zines
