The 3D of Fashion

THE 3D OF FASHION
(Looking at the three dimensions of fashions)

Fashion is ever changing. And there is no telling what is coming down the catwalk. But all fashion, has somethings in common. So much so that the following – three ways to catalogue – fashion, can help bring fashion analysis from flat to 3D. And it can show not only what fashion is, but what it can be.

1. FROM FUNCTION TO COSTUME
2. FROM FITTING THE BODY TO BUILDING ON THE BODY
3. FROM CLOTH TO EVERYTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE WORN

Take any fashion piece, clothing or ornament. They all fit somewhere along these 3 lines:

1. FROM FUNCTION TO COSTUME

Function <—————————–> costume

Clothes from shoes to hats, are there to protect us from harm and to keep us warm in the cold. But as quickly as clothes were developed to protect us, they also took on the other function – to adorn us and make us look better.
All clothes fit along this line. Work clothes are closer to the left, and theater costumes are farther to the right.

2. FROM FITTING THE BODY TO BUILDING ON THE BODY

FITS THE SHAPE OF THE BODY <————-> ENHANCES THE BODY SHAPE

Clothes either accent the body shape as is, or they build on it to accent a part through shape, pattern, color, etc. . They either fit the body as it is now, or they start with the body as a manikin and build any shape on to it that the designer wants.
A body stocking fits the shape of the body it covers, but a wide brimmed hat enhances the shape of the head and turns it into a new fashion statement of its own.

3. FROM CLOTH TO EVERYTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE WORN

CLOTH <——————> EVERYTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE WORN

Cotton, silk, man made fabrics; are at one end of this line. While at the other is everything else that we wear: jewelry, metal buckles, makeup, etc. etc.

Those who want to analyze fashion, now have a simple 3 way process that connects all fashion. Those who want to be fashion designers can see how their work fits in with others work. And those who want to look at fashion for fun, now can better understand the range of fashion design.
