“We Built This City”, the 80’s song by Starship, featuring Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick, that reached #1 on the US Billboard charts in November 1985; is considered by many the WORST song of the 80’s, and perhaps of all time.*
But for me the music is fine. No it’s not the music, nor even the video (that is pure MTV, 80’s fodder), it’s those lyrics!**
And the lyric line that bothers me, and most others, the most , is this:
MARCONI PLAYS THE MAMBA, LISTEN TO THE RADIO
So….. what does that mean? Marconi invented the radio – we got that part. But does he play the mamba, a deadly snake, or the mambo, a dance? Either way it’s just as silly.
The rest of the lyrics are far from stellar, but they will do, at least they are good enough to move the song from the worst ever to not that bad. .
That is IF we can repair that line. Here is my suggestion.
MARCONI LED TO AIRWAVES, LISTEN TO THE RADIO
So what do you think? That would not turn it into a song with great lyrics, but it may save it from the bottom of the heap!
*Search title + worst song, for the discussion. Then see the video and hear the song on youtube.
** Which is somewhat strange because Bernie Taupin, the lyric writer for many of Elton John’s best songs, is one of the composers
